Brenda Johnson

nonprofit development professional

Brenda Johnson is a nonprofit development professional who enjoys connecting individual philanthropists to causes which align with their passions.  Her areas of expertise include major gifts, capital campaigns, data-driven fundraising strategies and donor database systems. Brenda held senior development positions at several national organizations addressing human rights, civil liberties and women and girls’ empowerment.  In her current role as Senior Director of Philanthropy for Year Up, she serves as a national staff person responsible for developing and implementing the major and principal gift program in the Atlanta market.

Prior to her current role, Brenda served as Director of Philanthropy for the ACLU of Georgia, Director of Development for the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership and Development Manager during the Center for Civil and Human Rights’ $74 million capital campaign.

Throughout her nonprofit career, Brenda saw nonprofits struggle to achieve the resource development capacity necessary to sustain and grow - and the resulting pressure experienced by fundraising staff.  To share her expertise with rising and seasoned development professionals, Brenda currently facilitates courses as a Nonprofit University faculty member with the Georgia Center for Nonprofits.

Brenda received a BS in Engineering from Purdue University, where she minored in Sociology and Political Science.  Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, she enjoys the climate and hospitality of the south, and has made Atlanta home for her and her family for over 20 years.
