How did you get interested in the fundraising profession?

I actually stumbled into development work while living in Nashville, TN. At the time, I was searching for a career that allowed me to be a change agent for the community and the world. Someone took a chance on me, trained, and mentored me. I have since learned that the fundraising profession is centered on changing communities and the world by linking donors and volunteers to causes that they are passionate about.

What is something you wish you knew early on in your fundraising career?

Find your passion, not a job. When you find your passion, you find your mission.

What is the one quality every fundraiser should have?

You must have patience with each donor. No two supporters are the same. Remember, you are simply an ambassador between the charity and patron. Your job is to educate and inspire your supporters.

What inspires you about the fundraising profession?

People. To be great in this profession, you must love people sincerely and be willing to give of yourself unconditionally. You meet some great individuals that truly want to transform the world and have the means too. When you share your organization's story and how their support is helping to make that happen, wow! What a feeling!

How do you want to be remembered as a professional?

I want to be remembered for paying it forward. I consider it a duty and privilege to spread awareness about careers in the non-profit industry within the African American community, and to help encourage and mentor the next generation of African American development professionals. I am frequently “the only person who looks like me” when I walk into a room filled with development professionals. I want to help change that.
