Job Description

Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Alliance for Justice (AFJ) is a national nonprofit dedicated to strengthening the progressive movement by advancing fair, independent federal and state courts and building the advocacy power of nonprofits. Headquartered in Washington, DC, AFJ brings together deep legal expertise, decades of advocacy leadership, and a network of more than 135 member organizations committed to a more equitable judiciary and a more just democracy. In the wake of the 2024 election, AFJ’s work has become even more urgent as threats to democracy, civil rights, and nonprofit advocacy intensify.

Mission: To build the strength of progressive movements by equipping nonprofits to advocate effectively and by transforming state and federal courts.

Vision: A vibrant, multiracial constitutional democracy where marginalized communities are centered in the halls of power.

Founded in 1979 to counter conservative legal strategies reshaping the courts, AFJ has played a pivotal role in judicial nominations for more than four decades. Through its Justice Program, AFJ partners with advocates nationwide to champion the appointment of movement lawyers and defenders of equal justice. AFJ has been central to the confirmations of hundreds of diverse and highly qualified judges, and its research and advocacy have shaped the national conversation about the courts—from opposing nominees like Robert Bork and Brett Kavanaugh to supporting the historic confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

AFJ’s Bolder Advocacy program, launched in the 1990s, is the nation’s leading resource for nonprofits and foundations seeking to engage in advocacy while staying compliant with IRS rules. The program has trained more than 100,000 nonprofit leaders, helping organizations advance legislative, ballot, and civic engagement efforts. AFJ is now expanding this work through AFJ Law, a new initiative providing direct legal guidance to strengthen nonprofit advocacy capacity.

AFJ’s strength is rooted in its diverse membership network of 135+ organizations working for civil rights, workers’ rights, reproductive freedom, environmental justice, and more. Its affiliated 501(c)(4), AFJ Action, advances public understanding of the courts and supports advocates operating in the 501(c)(4) space.

The Opportunity

AFJ is seeking a Vice President for Institutional Advancement to lead and grow its development and revenue strategy at a defining moment for the organization and the country. Reporting to the President and serving on the senior management team, the VP will guide AFJ and AFJ Action’s advancement strategy, expand a diversified revenue pipeline, deepen donor engagement, and support a team managing major gifts, institutional giving, operations, earned revenue, and membership.

The ideal candidate brings a strong fundraising record, experience leading high-performing teams, strategic and creative thinking, and a deep commitment to AFJ’s mission. This leader will work closely with the President, Board, and program teams to set ambitious goals, cultivate donors, strengthen systems, and elevate AFJ’s visibility and impact.

This role offers a competitive salary range of $190,000–$220,000, a comprehensive benefits package, and flexible remote location options (with preference for DC, NY, or CA). Travel is required.
