Senior Communications Manager
Full-Time | Leadership Role | Reports to Executive Director
Position Overview
The Senior Communications Manager is a strategic, entrepreneurial leader responsible for all creative communications, external messaging, and brand development for the Boston Food Forest Coalition (BFFC).
This role serves as the organization’s chief storyteller and strategic communications architect. You will shape and elevate BFFC’s visibility as a leader in:
Parkland equity
Ecological agriculture
Community resilience
Climate action in Boston
This position is directly tied to revenue growth. The Senior Communications Manager will translate on-the-ground impact into compelling narratives that increase donor engagement, expand philanthropic investment, and grow both local and national presence.
Key Responsibilities
I. Communications Strategy & Fundraising Leadership (25%)
Strategic Planning
Develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with fundraising and budget growth goals.
Position all external messaging to expand individual donor engagement and organizational visibility.
Cross-Functional Leadership
Serve as a senior advocate for storytelling and brand strategy across Advancement, Program, and Stewardship teams.
Ensure communications efforts directly support fundraising objectives.
Narrative Ownership
Identify emerging narrative opportunities.
Partner with leadership to shape messaging that advances brand growth and revenue impact.
Fundraising Communications
Lead annual appeal process (writing, email builds, scheduling, graphics).
Manage key marketing collateral and event communications.
Develop bespoke materials for major donor cultivation and stewardship meetings.
II. Narrative Storytelling & Content Creation (25%)
Creative Direction
Lead storytelling across digital and print platforms.
Develop compelling impact narratives focused on stewards, parks, plants, agroecology, and community transformation.
Align content with funding priorities and appeals.
Content Execution
Write, edit, proofread, design, and produce high-quality content.
Create video and visual assets using:
Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
Canva
Print & Digital Production
Oversee annual report and all marketing collateral.
Manage vendor relationships as needed.
Visual Asset Management
Coordinate external photographers and videographers.
Capture and document park transformation and events.
III. Digital Strategy & Brand Management (20%)
Brand Stewardship
Maintain creative and visual consistency across all platforms, including signage and print collateral.
Social Media Strategy
Develop growth-focused, trend-aware social content.
Increase engagement and expand audience reach.
Website Management
Manage and evolve BFFC’s Squarespace website.
Build new resource sections and update park pages in collaboration with internal teams.
Newsletter & Email
Redesign and manage monthly newsletter (Bloomerang).
Manage general info@ inbox communications.
IV. Media Relations & Visibility (20%)
Media Strategy
Build and execute a proactive press placement strategy.
Cultivate relationships with local and regional media outlets.
Secure coverage that elevates BFFC among:
Philanthropic audiences
Corporate partners
High-net-worth individuals
Spokesperson Support
Serve as media contact when appropriate.
Prepare leadership for interviews and speaking engagements.
Community Visibility
Drive neighborhood and regional event presence.
Increase local awareness and participation.
V. Measurement, Learning & Reporting (5%)
Develop analytics framework to track communications performance.
Report quarterly on communications and fundraising impact.
Translate data into actionable insights for internal teams.
Qualifications
7+ years of experience in communications, marketing, fundraising, and content strategy (nonprofit or startup preferred).
Demonstrated ability to drive measurable fundraising growth through communications.
Experience building annual appeals and donor-facing materials.
Strong social media strategy and growth experience.
Proficiency in:
Adobe Creative Suite
Squarespace
Canva
Google Suite
Experience with Bloomerang or similar CRM preferred.
Media relationship experience preferred.
Familiarity with nonprofit impact measurement and data-informed storytelling.
Knowledge of Boston’s urban agriculture ecosystem preferred.
Understanding of permaculture, ecological agriculture, or agroecology is a plus (or willingness to learn).

*BFFC is committed to internal equity for salary and benefits and therefore does not negotiate compensation.
This is a Boston, Massachusetts-based position that will require regular in-person time, with travel between Boston neighborhoods.
The position will include a mix of in-person (at least 3 days a week) and virtual/remote work, with some time spent documenting community events and workshops, interviewing community members and stewards, and supporting cross-coalition on-site events on the weekends.
BFFC is committed to sustainability and supports staff in taking time off to balance evening and weekend hours.
