Friends of the Children - Los Angeles
Job Description
Chief Advancement Officer
Friends of the Children – Los Angeles
Los Angeles, California (Hybrid)
The Moran Company [www.morancompany.com] is pleased to partner with Friends of the Children – Los Angeles (Friends LA) to recruit the organization’s next Chief Advancement Officer (CAO).
Founded in 2017, Friends LA [www.friendsla.org] is a chapter of the national Friends of the Children network, which began 30 years ago. Friends LA’s mission is to create generational change by empowering youth facing the greatest obstacles through long-term, professional mentorship relationships lasting 12+ years - no matter what. Professional mentors provide weekly, one-on-one support to children and families from kindergarten through high school graduation, using a two-generational approach that supports both youth and caregivers. Friends LA is widely recognized as the premier child mentoring organization in Los Angeles County.
Friends LA employs more than 80 full-time staff, led by a dynamic Executive Director and supported by an engaged Advancement team that includes a Major Gifts Officer, External Relations Manager, and Development Operations Manager. The organization operates five sites across LA County, with headquarters in Metro-South Los Angeles and additional locations in Antelope Valley, San Gabriel Valley, and South Bay. Friends LA manages an $8 million annual operating budget and is pursuing a strategic growth plan to double the number of families served by 2027 while increasing annual revenue to $12 million.
This hybrid position is based in Los Angeles County. Candidates must reside in LA County, work onsite at least once per week, and regularly attend donor meetings throughout the region. Reporting to the Executive Director and serving on the executive leadership team, the CAO will lead all revenue-generating and external engagement strategies, including major and principal gifts, institutional and grant funding, corporate partnerships, events, strategic communications, and board engagement. The CAO will oversee a team of three and strengthen systems, processes, and fundraising infrastructure to support sustainable growth.
This role is ideal for a seasoned advancement leader who brings strategic vision, hands-on execution, and a passion for building a culture of philanthropy in a complex market like Los Angeles. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree and have 10+ years of senior advancement experience with demonstrated success across multiple revenue streams. Expertise in institutional giving and major gifts is required; familiarity with child welfare systems or public funding environments (including Medi-Cal) is a plus.
The salary range is $175,000–$190,000, with a comprehensive benefits package. Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter to Angie Heer by February 9th. The resume should include all professional education and experience, examples of fundraising accomplishments, dates of employment (month and year), position/title, and organization names. The cover letter should highlight your relevant experience, passion for Friends of the Children LA’s mission, and your approach to building and scaling fundraising revenue.
