About the Organization

Cityside is a nonpartisan, nonprofit journalism organization in the Bay Area with three local news sites, Berkeleyside, The Oaklandside and Richmondside.

Job Description

Position salary range:  $92,882 -$110,905

Position reports to:  Senior Development Director

You’ll play a crucial role in Cityside’s fundraising success by ensuring that the more than 8,000 members and donors who fuel our mission are meaningfully engaged through regular and effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities. The Development Manager will report to the Sr. Director of Development on efforts to acquire, renew, and upgrade members by executing a detailed membership plan and providing strong customer service. The ideal candidate must have a passion for nonprofit local journalism and strong organizational and communication skills.

What you’ll do

Design and lead the execution of targeted seasonal membership campaigns, including direct mail and digital outreach
Identify members with the greatest potential for upgrade and create and implement tailored strategies to increase their giving level
Develop and execute strategies to increase mid-level ($250 – $999) membership donations
Manage, leverage, and maintain membership data in our donor management system
Track, analyze, and report on membership performance and trends, providing insights and recommendations to optimize growth strategies
Respond to member inquiries, resolve issues, and ensure timely and responsive communication
Craft compelling membership-related communications, including email campaigns and website updates
Help launch new membership groups as they develop, including a legacy giving society
Assist in planning and coordinating donor cultivation and stewardship events

Required qualifications

4 or more years of fundraising experience
Strong organizational skills
Good communication skills
Strong database and email service provider software skills
Experience with fundraising operations
Must be authorized to work in the United States
Must be able to commute to the Oakland office

Are proficient with Mailchimp or similar ESP
Have customer service experience
Have experience managing membership programs
Have experience coordinating events
Have nonprofit experience
Have journalism industry knowledge

What we offer

This is a bargaining position and the salary ranges from $92,882 to $110,905, depending on experience, as outlined in our collective bargaining agreement.

In Fall 2024, Cityside marked a major milestone, the signing of its first collective bargaining agreement with the Cityside Guild. After 6 months of collaborative and constructive negotiation, we are proud of the final agreement. It will help us meet an important organizational goal—to be a good place to work and a place where good work is done. In 2025, the Director of People and the Cityside Guild members will continue working together on the adoption of the agreement, using it as a tool to strengthen our commitment to being an organization that cares for its employees.
