The role carries a special emphasis on building and managing a robust Major Gifts pipeline.

While a high degree of independence is expected, success in this role also requires genuine collaboration across the Development team and other departments.

The Associate Director directly supervises the Major Gifts Officer and works in close partnership with the Individual Giving Manager, who oversees the Individual Giving Associate.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with the Director of Development to develop and maintain a comprehensive solicitation strategy for the assigned portfolio, focusing on upgrading annual gifts, securing leadership gifts, and cultivating a pipeline of new donors with an emphasis on Major Gifts

  • Provide support and guidance, when appropriate, to the Producing Artistic Director, Managing Director, Director of Development, Board Members, and senior leadership on the cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation of current and prospective major donors

  • Oversee the Major Gifts Officer in acquisition and retention of higher-level donors ($10,000 and above), managing successful stewardship, cultivation, and moves management strategies

  • Provide strategic oversight and partnership to the Individual Giving Manager, supporting Annual Fund growth across Membership and Annual Fund donor levels

  • Cultivate and steward major donors through personal visits, correspondence, and meaningful touchpoints throughout the year

  • Oversee the accuracy of program book lists and other donor recognition

  • Regularly attend performances to welcome donors and advance donor relationships

  • Update and maintain bio data, contact information, call reports, moves management records, and other interactions in Tessitura

  • Create new strategies using performances, events, community programs, and donor benefits to encourage increased participation and new or expanded support

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Knowledge

  • Exceptional writing skills, with demonstrated ability to craft persuasive major gift proposals, donor narratives, and calls-to-action that inspire leadership-level giving

  • Superior verbal communication, negotiation, and analytical skills

  • High level of personal and professional integrity in dealing with colleagues, Board Members, and donors

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative, while also leading, mentoring, and supporting direct reports in achieving team goals

  • High degree of organization, attention to detail, and ability to multitask

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience
