Job Description

Position Summary

The Senior Development Officer is responsible for securing major gifts to support Johns Hopkins University and its divisions or departments.

The Senior Development Officer manages the full lifecycle of a portfolio of $1M+ high-potential prospects and donors, implementing strategic fundraising plans while working collaboratively with university leadership, faculty, staff, and colleagues to achieve fundraising goals.

This role focuses on securing gifts of $100,000 and above.

The position requires travel and meetings on and off campus during both regular and non-traditional business hours and is expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy.

The Whiting School of Engineering seeks a skilled major gift officer to join its Development and Alumni Relations team.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, the Senior Development Officer will maintain a Northeast region-focused portfolio of individual constituents with the capacity to make six- and seven-figure gifts.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of new and existing major gift donors

  • Develop and execute personalized cultivation strategies to engage assigned prospects and donors

  • Execute engagement and solicitation strategies for principal-level donors as appropriate

  • Collaborate with divisional, departmental, and Development & Alumni Relations (DAR) leadership to establish and implement comprehensive fundraising goals

  • Develop annual work plan goals in consultation with leadership and track fundraising activity within the CRM

  • Collaborate with fundraising professionals and specialists across DAR to develop integrated fundraising strategies, including:

    • Foundation giving

    • Corporate giving

    • Planned giving

  • Develop and implement annual stewardship plans for assigned donors

  • Implement pipeline-building strategies utilizing data analytics and proactive outreach

  • Conduct regular donor meetings, both in-person and virtually, to strengthen relationships and advance prospects through the donor lifecycle

  • Prepare and present compelling proposals that articulate Johns Hopkins University's or Johns Hopkins Medicine's priorities, values, and vision to secure major gift commitments

  • Create, lead, and collaborate on major development events, including:

    • Advisory Board meetings

    • Lecture series

    • Virtual seminars

    • Professorship dedications

    • Donor recognition events

  • Lead and manage volunteer groups such as advisory boards or councils, when appropriate

  • May supervise staff by assigning responsibilities, mentoring team members, monitoring performance, resolving conflicts, and ensuring compliance with university policies

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with faculty

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of departmental and divisional:

    • Mission

    • History

    • Teaching

    • Research

    • Clinical programs

  • Stay informed regarding institutional priorities, partnerships, and funding opportunities

  • Train and brief internal colleagues on current fundraising priorities and cases for support

  • Represent Johns Hopkins University at events and activities that support fundraising objectives

  • Prepare reports detailing fundraising activity and progress toward goals for leadership

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Additional Responsibilities

In addition to the responsibilities above, the Senior Associate Director of Development will:

  • Manage a portfolio of prospects capable of making six- and seven-figure gifts

  • Conduct a minimum of 100 in-person or virtual donor meetings annually, with primary emphasis on the Northeast region

  • Proactively identify and qualify new major gift prospects for the Whiting School of Engineering

  • Serve as the primary development liaison for 2–3 academic departments within the Whiting School of Engineering

  • Meet regularly with faculty to encourage engagement in fundraising initiatives and support departmental advisory boards

  • Collaborate closely with constituent engagement colleagues and assist with planning and executing regional events throughout the Northeast

  • Partner with Development & Alumni Relations colleagues across Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine to align fundraising strategies and maximize outcomes

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Minimum of five years of related professional experience

Equivalent Experience

Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education in accordance with the Johns Hopkins University equivalency formula beyond a high school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Master's or J.D.)

  • Higher education and/or academic medical fundraising experience

  • Demonstrated success securing major gifts of $100,000 or more

  • Advanced proficiency with:

    • Microsoft Word

    • PowerPoint

    • Excel

    • Outlook

  • Experience using a fundraising CRM

  • Plus Delta Partners training or equivalent major gift fundraising training preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a collaborative team member while providing guidance and mentorship to colleagues

  • High degree of professionalism, discretion, and a relationship-driven, service-oriented approach

  • Willingness to travel extensively throughout the Northeast region, including a minimum of two overnight or multi-night trips each month

  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends in support of fundraising events and travel
