Job Description

Position Details

  • Position: Senior Director of Institutional Philanthropy

  • Salary Range: $150,000–$165,000

  • Reports To: Chief Development Officer

  • Work Arrangement: Full-time, Fully Remote (U.S.-based)

Position Overview

United States of Care is seeking a Senior Director of Institutional Philanthropy to join a team of passionate, adaptable, accountable, and innovative problem-solvers dedicated to improving the nation's health care system.

This senior leadership role is essential to USofCare’s long-term sustainability.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Senior Director independently leads the organization’s institutional fundraising strategy, building and managing a portfolio of foundation and institutional partnerships that support core programs, new initiatives, and organizational growth.

The Senior Director:

  • Builds and sustains long-term relationships with institutional funders

  • Tracks shifts in philanthropic trends and understands their impact on organizational positioning

  • Manages funder relationships with sound strategic judgment, knowing when to advance opportunities, when to listen, and when patience is required

In any given week, responsibilities may include:

  • Developing grant proposals with program leaders

  • Preparing the CEO for high-level cultivation meetings

  • Analyzing changes in foundation funding priorities

  • Stewarding long-standing institutional partners

  • Identifying and cultivating new funding prospects

  • Managing grant timelines and reporting requirements

  • Conducting prospect research

  • Coordinating grant budgets with operations staff

  • Maintaining disciplined stewardship across a diverse institutional portfolio

The Senior Director serves as a connector across the organization, partnering with the Chief Development Officer, program leadership, and Communications to ensure fundraising strategies accurately reflect both the organization's mission and the needs of the communities it serves.

A key priority for this position is expanding unrestricted funding through thoughtful relationship-building and compelling institutional funding strategies.

Current Portfolio

  • Current institutional grant portfolio: $3–4 million

  • Growth goal over the next 3–5 years: $6–8 million

Qualifications

Successful Candidates Will Bring

  • 10+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience with progressively increasing responsibility

  • Minimum of 8 years of foundation relations experience

  • Demonstrated success managing and growing a diverse institutional grant portfolio

  • Experience raising $4 million or more in foundation funding

  • Experience stewarding 20+ concurrent institutional funder relationships with minimal supervision

  • Extensive grant writing, proposal development, and grant budget preparation experience

  • Ability to collaborate closely with program teams to translate complex initiatives into compelling funding proposals

  • Experience developing and implementing strategies that identify and convert new institutional funding prospects

  • Demonstrated success securing unrestricted and flexible funding

  • Exceptional relationship-building skills with foundation staff, institutional funders, executive leadership, program teams, and communications colleagues

  • Strong understanding of:

    • Revenue forecasting

    • Grant budget oversight

    • Portfolio management

  • Experience using fundraising CRM systems (Raiser’s Edge preferred)

  • Proficiency with Google Workspace (G Suite)

  • Willingness to leverage AI tools to improve workflow efficiency

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where priorities may shift

Compensation

  • Salary Range: $150,000–$165,000 annually

  • Salary is based on experience and geographic location.
