About the Organization
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T) is seeking a dynamic and experienced fundraising leader to serve as Associate Vice Chancellor for Development at a pivotal moment in the institution’s growth. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, the Associate Vice Chancellor will be a seasoned advancement professional with a strong understanding of public higher education and comprehensive fundraising operations. The AVC will provide strategic leadership and oversight for central fundraising programs—including annual giving, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, major gifts, and school, college, and athletics development—while working in close partnership with the Vice Chancellor to strengthen and expand the University’s overall advancement efforts. As a key member of the Advancement leadership team, the AVC will play a central role in building a cohesive fundraising operation and preparing the University for a successful comprehensive campaign.
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development will be a fundraising professional with a strong understanding of Public Higher education. The AVC will oversee central fundraising programs, including annual giving, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, major gifts as well as school, college and athletics development programs. Working in close partnership with the Vice Chancellor for Advancement, the AVC will help to grow and strengthen NC A&T’s overall advancement efforts.
The AVC leads strategic fundraising efforts that advance the mission and goals of North Carolina A&T. Serving as both a frontline fundraiser and mentor, the AVC manages key donor relationships, secures major gifts, and coaches development staff to achieve ambitious fundraising goals. In partnership with the Vice Chancellor for Advancement, the AVC establishes performance metrics, implements best-practice fundraising strategies across annual, major, corporate/foundation, and planned giving programs, and evaluates program effectiveness. This collaborative leader also drives operational improvements, strengthens fundraising infrastructure, and guides a high-performing development team to build a sustainable, university-wide culture of philanthropy.
Job Description
The Associate Vice Chancellor for Development will have the opportunity to unlock the extraordinary potential of North Carolina A&T’s passionate alumni community by transforming Aggie pride into greater philanthropic engagement and expanding alumni participation in giving. The role also offers the chance to build and mentor a high-performing advancement team by fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional growth while leading by example as a frontline fundraiser. In partnership with a dynamic new generation of campus leadership, including recently appointed deans and a visionary chancellor, the AVC will help translate institutional momentum into meaningful philanthropic growth by cultivating new donors, strengthening pipelines, and establishing strategies that support long-term fundraising success.
The ideal candidate will bring a master’s degree and at least five years of progressively responsible leadership experience within a mature development program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. They will have demonstrated success managing and motivating teams in a collaborative environment, along with experience playing a leadership role in a university-wide campaign. This individual will possess exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with academic leaders, faculty, staff, donors, civic partners, and volunteers to achieve strong philanthropic results. The successful candidate will also demonstrate the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, creativity, and initiative, along with the flexibility to travel and work evenings or weekends as needed.
Preferred candidates will have experience in higher education fundraising and a proven record of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts at the six- and seven-figure levels from individuals, foundations, and corporations. They will be an inspiring and supportive manager who brings out the best in staff, fosters a culture of collaboration and accountability, and leads teams with confidence and vision. Additional strengths include the ability to design and implement complex development strategies, manage budgets and resources effectively, lead annual campaign efforts, and understand the nuances of planned giving and corporate and foundation fundraising. A track record of increasing leadership responsibility, strong strategic planning skills, and a collegial spirit with a sense of humor will further enhance a candidate’s portfolio.
