Major Gifts Officer

Reports To

Executive Vice President, Membership & Development

Position Summary

The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for the strategic identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual prospects with capacity at the $1,000–$25,000+ level.

The position manages a portfolio of prospects and works collaboratively across the organization to build upon WABE’s fundraising success.

Accountabilities

  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit major gift prospects throughout all phases of the fundraising cycle, focusing on donors with the capacity to make gifts of $1,000–$25,000 and above

  • Develop and manage a portfolio of prospects and maintain active efforts to evaluate prospects identified through fieldwork, screening, and research

  • Develop, execute, and lead strategies for involvement, cultivation, and solicitation of single- and multi-interest donors

  • Utilize clear and effective language skills to gather qualification information and invite prospects into collaborative discussions

  • Maintain a disciplined approach to confirming proposal details verbally with prospects by asking clarifying questions

  • Ensure that donor conversations are grounded in both the measurable and emotional impact gifts can have on organizational priorities

  • Strategically utilize resources for cultivation and solicitation

  • Collaborate with higher-level WABE staff and effectively leverage donor stories to illustrate how others partner with WABE

  • Demonstrate sound judgment and predict how decisions will affect individuals and groups across the organization

  • Develop strategies to build support for organizational decisions

  • Develop thoughtful stewardship plans for key donors, including:

    • High-level impact reports

    • Dedications

    • Special events

  • Maintain a focus on re-qualifying donors as they move from stewardship back into active donor engagement

  • Assist with planning and executing cultivation events and programs

  • Maintain a robust knowledge of organization-wide funding priorities and general program priorities

  • Assist leadership in recognizing and prioritizing institutional and departmental funding needs

  • Stay informed regarding organizational priorities, programs, personalities, and events

  • Facilitate collaboration among various functional and stakeholder groups

  • Maintain active communication with fellow development officers to coordinate prospect activity and make and receive referrals

  • Demonstrate sophisticated understanding of the organization and effectively communicate its greatest needs, top priorities, and practices

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described

  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skills

  • Three to six years of fundraising experience, preferably in leadership annual giving or major gifts within higher education or public radio

  • Must be willing to travel

  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and prospects and align them with WABE priorities

  • Interest in public media and dedication to promoting WABE’s fundraising priorities

  • Demonstrated high probability of gift closure

  • Strong collaborative abilities and enthusiasm for teamwork

  • Significant experience staffing major gift volunteers; campaign volunteer management preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, complex fundraising activities simultaneously

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrates active listening skills

  • High level of creativity, initiative, and motivation

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding prospects and donors

  • Sitting or standing as needed

  • Walking on level surfaces for periodic periods throughout the day

Work is performed in a traditional office environment with standard lighting, temperatures, and office equipment.

Candidates must:

  • Be willing to work in a hybrid environment

  • Provide their own transportation to the station

  • Occasionally work evenings and weekends to support departmental events or high-volume periods such as membership campaigns
