Position Overview

The Planned Giving team is responsible for securing gift commitments through wills, trusts, retirement plans, and complex assets to provide Earthjustice with long-term financial support.

This role will have responsibility for the Northwest and Rocky Mountain regions, including:

  • Oregon

  • Washington

  • Alaska

  • Montana

  • Idaho

  • Nevada

  • Utah

  • Colorado

  • Wyoming

The Planned Giving Officer serves as the initial point of contact for prospects and applies working knowledge of revocable deferred gifts to perform deep discovery and qualification work.

Working in coordination with the wider development team, this role is responsible for the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of planned giving donors.

What You'll Do

Fundraising (60%)

  • Build and maintain an active portfolio of 80+ donors and prospects, developing specific plans for qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship

  • Serve as the first point of contact for inquiries via phone, email, and mail, applying planned giving knowledge to engage supporters in substantive conversations about their giving

  • Strategically manage relationships with Top Tier Evergreen Council members with provisions of $1M and up, recommending appropriate stewardship levels

Planning, Research & Data Management (30%)

  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of programmatic priorities to educate donors and research legacy prospects to inform engagement strategies

  • Manage all donor information and interaction notes in the CRM database, adhering to the highest standards of accuracy, timeliness, and confidentiality

  • Ensure all aspects of gift creation and administration align with IRS regulations, ethical standards, and organizational gift acceptance policies

Collaboration (10%)

  • Coordinate stewardship efforts with the Stewardship Specialist, Planned Giving

  • Design, plan, and execute one annual lunch event for supporters in the assigned region

  • Collaborate with major giving and mid-level giving colleagues across the Northwest and Rocky Mountain regions to provide seamless donor engagement and regional expertise

Ongoing Learning

  • Pursue professional development and contribute to a culture of learning

  • Build skills and share knowledge across the team

  • Stay current on tax law and planned giving trends through conferences, professional journals, and peer consultations

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of fundraising experience in an individual giving role

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • Demonstrated success building strong relationships with donors and staff through interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and tact

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex financial information clearly

  • Strong attention to detail and research skills

  • Experience with or knowledge of basic principles of planned giving and/or estate planning preferred

  • Demonstrated aptitude and desire to build fluency in planned giving, charitable tax planning, and estate administration

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to utilize CRM systems (Salesforce preferred)

  • Proven ability to manage multiple deadlines and projects effectively under pressure

  • Strong initiative and self-motivation with the ability to make sound independent decisions

Salary & Benefits

Earthjustice offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, along with a casual and collegial work environment.

Salaries are determined by work location and are commensurate with the experience required.

Salary Ranges

Seattle, WA

  • $107,400 – $119,300 annually

San Francisco, CA

  • $113,000 – $125,500 annually

Physical Requirements

This role may require the ability to:

  • Sit for extended periods with occasional standing and walking

  • Type, file, and/or handle office equipment

  • Lift and carry materials

  • Read documents, conduct computer work, and perform document review
