Chief Development Officer

For 30 years, Covenant House Greater Washington (CHGW) has been the region’s leading nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth ages 18–24 experiencing homelessness, disconnection, and exploitation. CHGW provides a safe haven and comprehensive wraparound services including housing, workforce readiness, job placement, and drop-in services designed to help youth overcome barriers and build a pathway to independence. CHGW seeks an experienced, dynamic, and mission-driven Chief Development Officer (CDO) to lead and grow its comprehensive fundraising program. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving on the Executive Leadership Team, the CDO will design and implement a multi-channel fundraising strategy, cultivate and steward major donors and institutional funders, and lead a talented Development team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in advancing CHGW’s mission to empower, safeguard, and serve youth across the Greater Washington region.
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy, including major and planned giving, grants, events, and campaigns.
• Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual and institutional donors to grow revenue and diversify funding streams.
• Collaborate with the CEO, board members, and committees to engage donors and drive philanthropic investment.
• Oversee development operations, including budgets, CRM management, and performance metrics.
• Lead and mentor the Development team, building a culture of accountability, collaboration, and inclusion.
• Partner with Covenant House International to align local efforts with national initiatives and increase brand visibility.
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate is an experienced fundraiser and inspiring leader who combines strategic vision with hands-on execution. They bring:
• A proven track record of securing six- and seven-figure gifts from individuals and institutions.
• At least 7 years of experience in fundraising and 3 years of team management experience.
• Strong financial acumen, data-driven decision-making skills, and an ability to optimize ROI.
• Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills to engage donors, partners, and colleagues.
• A deep commitment to CHGW’s mission and cultural competence to work effectively with diverse communities.
Compensation and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $140,000–$150,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
